Looking to plan a trip to Okefenokee. I wanted to do an overnight and I understand that they have platforms along the marsh you can camp at. I was wondering where I can reserve a campsite and apply for a permit. I was reading the article on No Man’s Life Blog and it mentioned a reservation and permit would be necessary.
I also wanted to see if anyone had recommendations on a launch point and a route.
Thanks
Sounds like fun, I did the trip a couple years back. I found pretty much everything I needed through recreation, gov and some resources on the DNR website.
Bring some bug spray lol
The trip sounds amazing. You’re right that you’ll need a permit and reservation for the camping platforms in the swamp. These can be reserved through Recreation.gov. Just search for “Okefenokee Wilderness Canoe Trails,” and you’ll find the permit application and platform availability there. Make sure to book early, especially for popular dates, as spots can fill up fast.
For a launch point, the two most popular are:
• Stephen C. Foster State Park: It’s quieter and great if you’re looking for easier access to the swamp’s western side.
• Suwannee Canal Recreation Area: This is on the eastern side and gives access to some fantastic routes with varied scenery.
As for a route, it depends on how much paddling you’re up for. A great beginner-friendly route is from the Suwannee Canal to one of the closer platforms, like Canal Run or Cedar Hammock. If you’re up for a longer adventure, Big Water and Floyd’s Island are excellent options. The staff at the launch points are usually super helpful and can suggest routes based on your skill level and trip duration.
Make sure to bring proper gear, as the swamp can get cold at night in the winter, and don’t forget your insect repellent (yes, even in the cooler months).
