Hello,
I wanted to see if anyone had any insights on surfing Lake Superior. I was hoping to get up there this winter and give it a try.
Would it be better to launch from Duluth or Marquette? Not just in terms of surf but also in terms of the city, lodging, and nightlife.
Are there any clubs or shops in either town that can help get me started?
Surfing Lake Superior in the winter can be an incredible experience, but it’s definitely not for the faint of heart. Both Duluth and Marquette have their own unique surf and city vibes. Duluth is known for its consistent winter waves, especially around Stoney Point, and has a solid surf community with shops like Duluth Surf Co. to help you get started. It’s also a bigger city with more lodging options and a decent nightlife scene, particularly around Canal Park. Marquette, on the other hand, has a more laid-back vibe with beautiful surf spots like Presque Isle and a smaller but passionate surf community. For lodging, Marquette has some cozy, locally-owned options, and its downtown has a cool mix of breweries and restaurants. If nightlife and a wider range of resources are important to you, Duluth might be the better choice, but if you’re looking for a quieter, more outdoorsy experience, Marquette is a great option. Either way, make sure you’re prepared for the extreme cold with proper gear, as Lake Superior in winter is no joke!
